RIVER OF NITROGEN. Map quantifies nitrogen in commercial fertilizer, in kilograms per square kilometer per year, that farmers apply to their fields throughout the Mississippi River watershed. Typically, 15 percent of the total drains into rivers that feed the Gulf of Mexico.
