By solving a decades-long mystery about the sun, researchers have set off a scientific ripple that could alter conceptions of the universe as a whole.

Two kilometers down in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, sensors on the interior of these studded panels detect dim flashes when neutrinos interact with heavy water inside this ball.
